The Truth About GH
The only thing actually proven to INCREASE LIFE SPAN is caloric restriction. In studies with monkeys, reducing calories by 30% increased life span by 10 months. Lab values showed an increase in GH with DECREASE in IGF-1 and cortisol.

In 1934, Mary Crowell and Clive McCay of Cornell University conducted a landmark nutritional study with rats. They discovered that rats fed a diet with 30% reduced calories (while maintaining their vital nutrient levels) lived up to twice as long as their counterparts that ate as much as they wanted.

More recently, former UCLA professor and pathologist Roy Walford, M.D. and his student, Richard Weindruch, conducted a similar experiment with mice. They found that the group with a drastically reduced caloric intake doubled their lifespan, when compared to mice that ate a normal diet. These calorie-restricted mice also had higher energy levels and a significant delay in all age-related diseases.

Not long after that, Life Extension magazine published an article by Donald K. Ingram, Mark A. Lane and George S. Roth about caloric restriction in our nearest genetic relatives, the primates. The study found that when monkeys consumed 30% fewer calories, they lived 30% longer - reaching 32 years of age, which corresponds to 96 human years.

That's the equivalent of adding 21 YEARS to the normal human life expectancy of 75.

The Truth About "Anti-Aging" Claims

Everywhere you look, you'll see advertisements for products claiming to be the next big "secret weapon" against aging. They tout some magical formula on par with merchandise that promises you'll "get rich quick" or "lose weight fast" and they probably work just as well - in other words, not at all.

The truth is that the general medical community now overwhelmingly accepts the only scientifically-established method of increasing lifespan - as evidenced in the aforementioned studies - is caloric restriction.

In each of those studies, scientists found that when calories were restricted, growth hormone (GH) levels went up while insulin-like growth factor type 1 (IGF-1) levels and cortisol (stress hormone) went down. IGF-1 is almost identical to insulin from a chemical and morphological standpoint and (like insulin and cortisol) is an indirect marker of inflammation (among many of it's functions).

The effects of higher levels of insulin-like growth factor type 1 (IGF-1) in the body are the same as the effects from higher levels of insulin. Therefore, the lower the levels of IGF-1 are, the more ideal the situation and the healthier the individual.

The problem occurred when at some point the full results of the studies began to be ignored. The focus fell only upon the clearly elevated growth hormone (GH) levels of these super-healthy rats, mice and monkeys. As a result of the caloric restriction studies showing increase in longevity along with an increase in GH, the conclusion that GH must be a miracle molecule capable of reversing the aging process became rampant. And so began the fad of people injecting themselves with synthetic versions of growth hormone without taking into account the affects from GH injections and how they would effect IGF-1 levels.

Synthetic GH vs. IGF-1

If you remember, whenever the animals had their calories restricted, their GH levels went up but their IGF-1 levels went down. Yet whenever anyone is injected with synthetic human GH (GH or hGH), the situation is not the same. Naturally, the GH levels do go up (you're injecting GH so of course that will go up) but the IGF-1 levels actually also go up.

Why? Because when GH reaches the liver, it takes on a new form. The liver converts GH to IGF-1.

Surprised? Well, it's true. And again, since IGF-1, insulin and cortisol are key markers of inflammation, the last thing you want is to increase the amount of these substances in your body. Want to know bad this can be? Look at all the complications that arise from the necessity of diabetics having to take insulin.

Cortisol is higher in people who are older, stressed, sedentary and/or overweight - and the same is true of insulin. Thus, the higher your IGF-1, insulin and cortisol levels, the more prone you are to weight gain, stress, heart trouble - even cancer.

In fact, in a 1990 study by Monsanto revealed statistically significant evidence of the problems with IGF-1. By their account, feeding relatively low doses of IGF-1 to mature rats for only two weeks resulted in statistically significant and biologically higher significant systemic effects including increased body weight; increased liver weight; increased bone length; and decreased epiphyseal bone width.

Later studies correlated increased IGF-1 levels with maintaining malignancy of breast cancer tumors, prostate cancer and colon cancer. Later, in September 2000, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute reported a correlation between IGF-1 and cancer in over 35 different types of malignancies.

The evidence is clear: synthetic GH isn't the answer to the search for the "Fountain of Youth". It's more like an unfortunate mirage that can slowly cause your health to deteriorate even more. Just look at many of the documented side effects with the use of injecting GH.

The Body Composition of Elite Athletes

Dr. Buttar has seen high-level athletes from around the world, including Olympic gold medalists, NFL and NBA players. He's noted that these world-class athletes tend to have low IGF-1 levels. This of course is in stark contrast to what the proponents of using synthetic GH were recommending to their patients.

So to get to the bottom of the confusion, Dr. Buttar decided to conduct a small study at his own medical clinic. The purpose was to compare the IGF-1 levels of fit, healthy athletic individuals to the IGF-1 levels of individuals who never exercised at all and had been essentially sedentary most of their adult lives. There was nothing else being evaluated in the study.

The three-week study was conducted with 38 patients. Seventeen were males and females who engaged in regular exercise, and the remaining 21 were sedentary males and females with no previous history of regular exercise. None of the patients were on hormonal treatment or had a history of manipulation with hormones or anything else, for a minimum of two years prior to entering into the study.

Again: if GH treatments (which virtually always increase IGF-1 levels) are truly "anti-aging" and good for you as the proponents maintained, then Dr. Buttar's study should have shown that the athletic individuals should have had higher IGF-1 levels than the non-athletic individuals - just by virtue of their healthier, more active lifestyles.

Yet it was totally the opposite. The highest IGF-1 level found in the athletic group was only 196, compared to 304 in the sedentary group.

Do you see the implication here?

This clearly demonstrated that the so-called "anti-aging" treatments and therapies that elevate the body's IGF-1 levels aren't making people younger - they're actually aging their bodies and moving people in the direction of those who are unhealthy and don't exercise, similar to sedentary individuals who have higher insulin levels because they are more insulin resistant.

The Bigger Problem

Now it should be clear why elevated IGF-1 levels are bad. Yet, there's an even bigger problem with GH treatments that virtually every doctor ignores - something that can destroy your health.

Your endocrine system (which regulates your hormones) is one of the most complex and important systems in your entire body. So many of the reactions in your body - including your energy levels, sex drive, overall mood and feelings of well being - ALL depend on your hormone health.

Human growth hormone is stimulated in the pituitary gland. When your body needs more GH a signal is sent to the pituitary, which notifies the proper glands to produce more GH. This ability to produce hormones declines with age, which is one of the reasons why older people have lower GH levels.

Consequently, there comes a time when your body still needs the proper hormonal levels to function properly but is no longer maintaining that balance. Clearly some sort of intervention is needed, but what else happens (besides the increased IGF-1 levels which we've already discussed) when you artificially introduce human GH into your body via an injection or some other proposed mechanism?

Simple: assuming that the therapy actually does have any legitimate affect, your body sends a signal to your pituitary gland that essentially says, "We've got plenty of GH here - no need to produce any!" This initiates what Dr. Buttar calls call the Negative Inhibitory Feedback Loop (NIFBL).

Though your body may not be producing the optimum amount of GH, it still produces some. But when you add an external source of growth hormone to the equation, the situation changes. The body now sees the levels going higher and higher. When it becomes too high, the system tries to shut of this increasing supply. This is the NIFBL.

However, the body can NOT prevent you from injecting yourself, ie, your body can't physically stop you from injecting the GH into your own body that you have been led to believe is beneficial for you through massive public marketing campaigns.

As you get more and more of the hormones entering your system, your body's natural production of hormones keeps dropping because your regulatory mechanism (in the case of GH it's the little gland that sits in the brain called the hypothalamus), tells the body to STOP making the hormones since the levels are too high.

Eventually, the organ that naturally produces this hormone in the body, no longer works due to the constant message being sent back that the levels are too high and that the organ should not be producing any more hormones. A perfect example where you see this is the body builder who takes too much testosterone and causes testicular atrophy (shrinkage of the testicles) due to lack of natural usage.

Not only does this take a horrific toll on your health, and shut off all your natural supply of hormones but - considering the fact that many GH treatment protocols can cost $1,000 - $2,000 each month - your pocketbook is taking a beating as well.

What's the answer?

In a perfect world our bodies would maintain the proper hormonal levels for as long as we lived, without any outside assistance. Since that is not the case, the second best thing would be a product that helps to optimize our endocrine systems and assists our glands in doing what they do best, ie, upregulating the actual gland that is naturally making the hormone in our system.

In the case of growth hormone, this would mean increasing the natural endogenous (what the body makes itself) GH levels in a natural manner so that there would be NO increase in IGF-1 levels during the process.
